Art in Mind

Art in Mind is a Brighton based organisation that raises awareness of mental health through art and supports children, young people and adults through regular group workshops.

Recently, I had the pleasure of collaborating with AiM on the Creative Resilience Project. Funded by Arts Council England and the National Lottery, this initiative saw me share my knowledge and experience with facilitators and young artists to create a series of tutorial videos highlighting ways in which art can help improve mental health and wellbeing.

I would regularly meet up with the group at Brighton Youth Centre to story-board, experiment with different film techniques and record sequences that would later be edited to create videos for AiM’s YouTube channel and Instagram page.

This was a really enjoyable project where I provided a balance between guiding the facilitators and young artists about the filmmaking process, whilst allowing the group the freedom to express themselves and have a voice in the creative process. Amongst my responsibilities, I demonstrated how to adapt techniques and camera settings depending on the type of artwork being filmed. For instance, a three-dimensional medium such as Lego would require a different approach compared to a two-dimensional process such as lino-printing. I also provided suggestions when it came to purchasing filmmaking equipment and also offered the experience I have gained in marketing and promoting different creative projects.

All of this culminated in the delivery of the Art That Saved Us exhibition at Brighton’s Jubilee Library. A film of which will be coming to this page very soon!

I hope to work again with Art in Mind. If this was possible, I would aim to shift to more of a producer role and encourage the group to have even greater control and freedom from pre-production right up to the distribution and promotion phases. This would include enabling the artists to create their own music for forthcoming videos which would allow all of our content to be 100% created and owned by the Art in Mind community!
